Lawyers Want Tory Lanez Questioned
Tory Lanez may be required to testify in Megan Thee Stallion’s defamation and cyberstalking lawsuit against YouTuber Milagro Cooper. On Monday (Feb. 24), the rapper’s legal team filed a motion for an oral deposition of the Canadian artist.
Court documents from legal journalist Meghann Cuniff show that “Mr. Peterson’s (Lanez’s) deposition is necessary for Ms. Pete (Megan) to fully investigate the extent and bases of Defendant’s conduct and Defendant’s relationship with Mr. Peterson in support of her claims.” The filing also referenced three cases where courts allowed depositions of incarcerated individuals based on relevant testimony.
Cooper is not opposed to the deposition proceeding. If approved by a judge, Lanez would answer questions from Megan’s lawyer through video conference or another “agreed-upon” method with California Correctional Institution, where he is currently held.
Megan alleges that Cooper acted as a “mouthpiece and puppet” for Lanez, who is serving a 10-year sentence for shooting the Houston rapper in 2020. According to the lawsuit, the blogger ran a campaign to “denigrate, belittle, insult and spread false statements” about her, as well as engaging in cyberstalking, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and invasion of privacy.
One concerning claim is that Cooper “willfully and maliciously promoted” a deepfake pornographic video of Megan. “I’ve endured countless attacks on my character based on false narratives from social media bloggers misrepresenting themselves as journalists,” she told Billboard in a statement. “This behavior is unacceptable, and these individuals need to realize there will be consequences for posting lies and defamatory statements.”
Lanez is under a five-year restraining order issued by Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Richard Bloom in January. The order will remain until Jan. 9, 2030, shortly after the DAYSTAR artist is eligible for parole.
