I thought the assignment would be a fun idea. It was handed to me as the freelancer initially meant to do the piece was taken ill. I was happy to take it on; it would give me an excuse to revel in all the ‘ excess and fun this time of year offers. Halloween is fun; we get dressed up and go out. That’s why I was asked to take over; when I asked what happened, I was told not to worry. I sensed more and decided to find out the truth.

Eventually, I found out after speaking to neighbors and friends. The guy, usually outgoing and friendly, had turned inward and withdrawn. He worked from home and only at night. It turns out he was at home, working, when there was some sort of noise in the street. A neighbor said they remembered the noise and looked out their window to investigate. She recalled a flash of lightning, like one so bright it seems to blind you temporarily. Then, a thunderbolt ripped across the sky, shaking all the windows in the neighborhood.
From what I gathered, the guy meant to write this story came outside into the street, seemingly looking for someone or something. Neighbors said he seemed to see something and stumbled backward, shouting, “No, No.” Whatever he saw was so terrifying that it shattered his mind. He stood out in the street, continually screaming, “No!!, No!!, No!!”. Over and over. Neighbors were so disturbed they called the police. When they arrived, they saw the guy still standing there shaking in terror, eyes bulging, and screaming.
Man’s Mind Shattered Through Fear
Police said the man’s mind had shattered from fear. They could get no sense from him. He just kept screaming. Officers tried to calm the man and get him to the patrol car but couldn’t move him. They reported it was as if he was rooted to the spot. No matter how hard they tried, they could not move him. Then suddenly, he just dropped to the ground and collapsed right in the street. One of the neighbors said it was like something out of a horror film,
” It scared the hell out of me. I’ve never seen anything like it in my life.” Another reported, ” He just dropped, and then suddenly it started to get cold; I mean, the temperature started to plummet,”
Police cautioned me not to believe”overactive imaginations ” and against relying on eyewitness accounts. This case was different, unlike many instances where the public’s recall of events can vary wildly. Everyone I spoke to recalled the sudden drop in temperature as the man fell. At first, I was inclined to agree with the police, but the more I read over the notes this man had written, the more uneasy I became.
