On Sunday, September 1, GloRilla GloRillawas honored with the key to the city of Memphis during an unofficial celebration. She took the stage downtown, performing her hit song “TGIF” at a vibrant all-day event that celebrated the local culture.
In her Instagram post, GloRilla expressed her pride, saying, “Memphis made me; Frayser raised me. I got [the] key to my city. Happy 901 Day, Memphis!” The post attracted comments of support from notable figures like Megan Thee Stallion, K Carbon, Moneybagg Yo, and Ludacris.
Gloss Up congratulated her, stating, “I’m proud of you! I watched you put in the work. You deserve it. Keep going up.” Lola Brooke chimed in simply with “Proud,” while GloRilla’s hairstylist celebrated with, “My baby got the key.”
In 2023, Drake also received a key to the city, recognizing his father’s Memphis roots and his love for the city, showcased in songs like “Under Ground Kings” and “Nonstop.” Shelby County Chairman Mickell Lowery highlighted Drake’s connection to Memphis, saying, “You got a lot of Memphis blood in you, and you’re definitely touching the world.”
Councilwoman Jana Swearengen-Washington added, “It’s an honor to celebrate Drake’s support of Memphis in the heart of my district! We appreciate his music and generous spirit! We truly soar in District 4!”
Amid the festivities, some fans questioned why Drake received the honor over local icons such as Yo Gotti, Young Dolph, Three 6 Mafia, and GloRilla herself. The “Tomorrow 2” star clarified, “I got this key almost a year ago.”
GloRilla’s latest project, *Ehhthang Ehhthang*Ehhthang Ehhthang, was released in April and features popular tracks like “Yeah Glo!” and “Wanna Be,” which includes a collaboration with Megan Thee Stallion. It just felt natural.”
