Nanaâs talent is undeniable
Hip hop and rap have undergone a significant transformation in recent years. The era of single-verse mumble rappers from the mid-to-late 2010s seems to be waning, and the genre is currently separated into two distinct camps. The first camp consists of smooth, stylized verse barons like Jack Harlow, who pay homage to the golden age of rap, reminiscent of legends like Snoop Dogg. The second camp is comprised of super-fast Mac Miller disciples like Megan Thee Stallion, who are precise and articulate but exhibit less swag. However, there are a select few rappers who can successfully merge both styles, and Nana Bangz excels in this regard.
Nana’s style fully embodies the late 90s aesthetic infused with Lilâ Kim’s energy, amplified by Nana’s unique performance persona. Her verses are tight, and her freestyle game is unmatched. She burst onto the scene in 2018 with her debut singles, showcasing her developed style and the ability to wrap her verses around the beat with an expertise that typically takes artists years to cultivate. Since then, she has continued to hone her craft, releasing over 15 tracks in 2022 and 2023, including 2021’s popular “Free Britney.”
Her latest track, “Alive,” released in 2024, is yet another example of her versatility, seamlessly blending different styles to create an incredibly dynamic verse. She channels Lady of Rage with party acumen and dusky vocal timbre ala Foxy Brown, switching between smooth, angry, and whip-fast lyrics, all within a minute-long track. The sample used in the track is classical and melodic, serving to juxtapose the heavy verse.
Nana’s talent is undeniable, on full display in her street performance video from New Orleans in 2021. Her natural skill and passion for hip hop shine through, making it clear that she was born to be a musician. Although it only a matter of time before the world discovers her, Nana remains dedicated to her craft, driven by her love for hip hop.
“Alive” is currently available for streaming on Spotify, while the video for her latest track, “Yay, Energy!” is featured on Nana Bang’z’s YouTube channel.
